Late Night Diving

by Rezo Glonti

Soviet White 05:09
Sub Numbers 04:43

The old and the new, and the personal and political collide in Rezo Glonti's EP Late Night Diving, which explores the history and contemporary reality of his post-Soviet home Georgia.
Inspired by old wedding footage found during a trip to rural Georgia, Glonti decided to write a piece celebrating joy and renewal in the face of oppression and despair. ''It was really inspiring and beautiful,'' he said of the footage, which was shot in 1985. ''I realised that despite the regime and the banning of certain things, people were happy and happiness and joy is universal and timeless, no matter when you live and where you live.''

Georgia has a complex history in relation to Russia. The country declared independence in 1918, was invaded and overtaken by the Red Army in 1921, and was part of the USSR until 1991.
As a nod to this history Glonti bought himself a vintage soviet mic, the mke 271 which he used for field recording.
During production of the EP Glonti was moving house himself. Exhausted from the process, he would sit down to work late at night surrounded by his boxed up possessions, and Soviet artifacts.

Given the subject matter it is not surprising Late Night Diving has a dreamy, timeless quality to it. Respectful rather than nostalgic it is an album full of individual and collective memories, and of hope. Snippets of guitars emerge from a background of hazy synth pads, and vintage-inflected field recordings, and dissolve. Static bursts forth like fireworks, dazzles then quickly disappears. The past is glimpsed amid the present, the new within the old.

Late Night Diving is an EP about changes, and struggles big and small. The struggle for national independence, the struggle to find a home. The struggle to change, and the struggle to stay the same. The struggle to remember and to forget.

Revolt, revolution and repetition.
