about

The desire to exist in an immersive landscape of his own creation is behind Melbourne musician Tim Bass’s album Pastures. Instead of trying to create a particular sound, in Pastures Bass has focused on carefully crafting a special place.
‘’My goal was to develop stable platforms where texture and movement could form their own
natural place. I wanted to move away from creating sound and move towards landscape,’’ he says.
Inspired by French philosopher Michel Foucault’s concept of heterotopia, which describes a space of layered meanings which is simultaneously mental and physical, Bass has created an album which rewards close and sustained listening.
From the opening swell of Eris, to the subtle shifts of Smoke plume rising and the closing ambience of Onward from nowhere, Pastures urges the listener to settle into to it, to dream of new ways of being and places to inhabit.
It is an album which rather than demanding your attention, patiently waits for you to notice just how special it is.
