"The weekly street market in Viseu, Portugal, also known locally as “The Tuesday’s market”, is a commercial and social hub which attracts buyers and sellers from the surrounding rural areas. There you can find a bit of everything, from clothes, shoes, animals, vegetables, agricultural products and farming utensils.
As we walk around the numerous market stools, finding our way through the crowded labyrinthine pathways which compose this weekly-changing space, one is confronted with the constant haggling of both sellers and buyers, each trying to make the best possible deal. The soundscape changes with every turn, creating an immensely interesting sonic tapestry which invites the listener to walk these makeshift streets in search for more.
Viseu is my original home town, a city I left almost two decades ago, but that still remains very much a part of who I am. The sounds, smells and colors of places such as this weekly market revive some of my pre-adolescent memories, reminding me of how it feels to be at home.
This soundwalk was recorded on a Tuesday morning, during the Summer of 2016."
