Dan Whiting - Georges River - Dawn's resilience

about

Dragonflies, sand stone and eucalypts - fibro, asphalt and corrugated iron. For me, there exists a true sense of duality within the Georges river.
Flowing through some of Sydney's most densely populated urban areas, there remains protected bushland along its shore. The distinctly suburban existence alongside the visceral natural heritage of the river offers a surreal journey, seemingly attempting to reconcile the history of it's original Indigenous owners with the urbane existence of south-western Sydney.
Rivers draw life to their shores. The Georges river continues to be a meeting place. That the surrounding suburbs constitute amongst the most culturally diverse in Australia is testament to the importance of rivers in all cultures.
That we continue to protect rivers and their stories while still contributing to their ongoing history is vital not only to their
natural importance and survival but their cultural significance to all. Resilience alone, is not enough.
