For the past 2+ years, I have worked in Brooklyn. I ride a bicycle to work most days, if the weather is not life-threatening.
Every day, no matter which route I take, I ride over or past the Gowanus canal.
The canal is not a beautiful waterway; there is no hiding its origin as a utility for late 19th century industry (which did not treat it kindly). Not a day passes where I do not enjoy passing it, even if the odour has found a new strength.
The canal has simply become part of my days.
These pieces were recorded in the garage of the building I work in. My intention was to make shorter works of an urban and industrial nature, dark but not morose - I don't see the need for a bucolic field recording piece about a spot most folks stay away from.
I’m not trying to communicate the reality of this waterway or this neighborhood. My work is subjective and impressionistic.
