Savaran - River Dovey - Ynyslas - estuarine

about

I love coastal scenery where mountains meet the sea to form a dramatic backdrop and I am blessed with quite a few of these locations within a short drive from our home. The River Dovey (Afon Dyfi in Welsh) flows from a remote lake high in the Cambrian Mountains and down to the sea over a 25 mile course through Mid Wales, snaking through the picturesque Dovey Valley in a series of long meanders on the way. The river terminates in a wide estuary at Aberdovey and Ynyslas. Ynyslas is one of my favourite locations and my wife and I often visit here for long walks round the estuary and along the beach. It is an amazing natural landscape of sea, sand dunes, saltmarsh and peat mires with a fantastic quality of light which has attracted many artists to the area. Legends talk of the lost land or Cantre'r Gwaelod in this region, which is actually a submerged Prehistoric landscape represented by the extensive tree stumps of a former forest that can be seen at low tide near the mouth of the estuary and along the beach.
