Simon Whetham - The Phoenix

from Birds of a Feather 5-6 by Simon Whetham and Broken Chip

/

about

The phoenix, that mighty mythological bird of rebirth and renewal has been a potent symbol for centuries. My fascination the creature began with a trip to Phoenix Island in Cambodia in June of 2012 where I did several recordings.
My work is derived solely from field recordings, and for me this act of creation is itself a kind of resurrection, a new being from the remnants of the old. Sound recordings are fragments of the past, and composing with these sounds is a means of deconstructing and reconstructing them, giving new life to echoes from times gone.
While working on the piece, I realised the phoenix could also stand in as a symbol of Cambodia, which along with Vietnam is a country struggling in many ways to recover from being torn apart by terrible wars which still affect the people. Both countries, like the Phoenix, are attempting a resurrection from the remains of the past.
