about

"The materials that Liz Helman used for The Colour of Water are unremarkable, simply recordings that she made on her daily walks through London. But what she has done with them is anything but ordinary. By applying delay, reverb, and echo, Helman summons massive drones that dwarf her original sounds as if they have been transplanted to a vast filmic landscape." Mathew Blackwell for BANDCAMP.
FEATURED IN BANDCAMP'S BEST FIELD RECORDING RELEASES COLUMN FOR NOVEMBER 2023

Moving with the eddies and swirls of the drone, Helman explores the ripples and depths of urban life in The Colour of Water.

Produced from a daily practice of walking in London, where Helman has lived for more than five decades, these seven compositions examine the contours and textures of that complex form of stillness which is produced in motion.

This is not an easy and solitary stillness, but one which derives from restlessness. The drive to go outside, to move, to live, explore and connect. As such Helman's compositions are produced in relation to not only her own motion, but that of the city itself, its layers of activity, and its human and non-human inhabitants.

We move, we encounter, we move some more.

In the rhythms of footfalls, and the dynamics of interaction, The Colour of Water invites us to experience Helman's idiosyncratic version of slowing down while speeding up.
