about

"An album of unrecognisable, repurposed field recordings that insists we draw our own maps." -- Raymond Cummings for THE WIRE

"(a) wonderful quiet version of music concreté" -- VITAL WEEKLY

Imaginary no-wheres dissolve into vividly rendered inventions in this thought provoking and sonically compelling album by the Alabama-based composer Ben Link Collins.
Fictionalism takes as its starting point an investigation into the relationship between truth and field recording. Inspired by fictionalism within mathematics, an approach which positions numbers themselves as little more than useful fictions, Collins adopts this attitude in relation to field recording, reworking these sounds in ways which offer entirely new narratives and possibilities.
Almost the opposite of many field recording works with their attempts to 'capture' or re-present both time and place, Collins offers an entirely radical take on field recording- and one which emphasises the plasticity, and possibilities contained within all sounds, even those which purport to be documentary.
He writes: "Every part of Fictionalism is an acoustic field recording. Every sound has been stripped from its context and given a new truth, the goal of which is a greater fiction.”
