Performed on Petr Válek's kinetic sculptures, as well as homemade synthesisers, ball bearings, kitchen utensils and suitcases, Metal crackles with energy, humour and tactility.

Metal on metal, metal and wood, metal and skin, rolling, whirring, tinkling, creaking and rustling. This is an album full of movement, abrasions, vibrations and encounters. There is a certain spontaneity and roughness to the performances captured too. Hands, bodies and surfaces are as much a part of these 13 pieces as the metallic constructions and objects used as instruments.

We hear these objects rolled, dropped, shaken and stretched. Mysterious processes begin, gyrating into perception, before suddenly ending, or clanking out of earshot. These pieces are both playful, and serious, by turns restless and patient. A celebration of not only frictions but fictions, the imagined as well as the material and concrete.

An album which offers us in listening the thrill and vitality of movement and interaction, between Válek, Merta and Tarnovski themselves and the spaces, surfaces, objects and inventions the trio perform with and through.

About Válek / Merta / Tarnovski

Metal is the first collaboration between Petr Valek, Ondřej Merta and Jara Tarnovski, and was created during a residency at Divadlo 29 in Pardubice in the Czech Republic.

Petr Válek is a painter, illustrator, musician and author of sound instruments and kinetic objects. Petr lives and works in Loučná nad Desnou in Jeseníky, Czechia. Since childhood, he has been interested in painting, drawing, book illustrations and music. He often performs as a musician and constructs mechanical and electro-mechanical sound instruments and kinetic sculptures/objects from found objects. His twirling, rustling, creaking, spinning, tinkling and gurgling objects have an unchangeable artistic value, referring to the aesthetics of pataphysics and the arte povera movement. At the same time, they are unique sound or musical functional instruments.

Jara Tarnovski
In addition to Gurun Gurun (Buh Records), Tarnovski also performs solo and with the groups Wabi Experience (Mikroton), IQ+1 (mappa), or in a duo with Mexican multimedia artist Laura Luna Castillo (Genot Centre). He is part of the AV project Telekinetic Assault Group. He also makes music for theatre, field recordings (under the moniker Prosoxi Skylos), and radio documentaries. Tarnovski often collaborates with Japanese musicians including Dustin Wong, Takako Minekawa, aus, and Asuna. He has collaborated with the singer Haco on two albums and toured with her in Japan and Europe. He also published a split with the Italian musician Mai Mai Mai and produced a retrospective 8-CD set by the Czech folk legend Oldřich Janota. He has also performed with Miki Yui, Seth Graham, Black to Comm, Yearning Kru, Dane Law, or Jan Jelinek. Tarnovski is a curator at the small label Jipangu, which focuses on experimental music and sound art.

Ondřej Merta
Brno-based Ondřej Merta, also known as OGJ, is a member of the experimental-pop duo Hugo & Zoe and has participated in numerous collaborative projects with artists such as Oliver Torr, Dirty Electronics, and Tomáš Niesner. Together with Václav Peloušek (aka Toyota Vangelis), Ondřej Merta co-founded Bastl Instruments, a community-based company focused on the handmade production of electronic musical instruments and modular systems. Ondřej also organizes concerts of experimental music at Vasulka Kitchen in Brno, organizes workshops and teaches at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Brno.
