Field recordings have always been an important part of my musical palette, however in this work, called "Provody" they are practically the only source of music. "Provody" is a one long recording, passed through a reel tape recorder, and divided into 9 pieces.

The recording was made on May 14, 2013 - on this day the celebration of Radonitsa was held that year. Radonitsa is the name of the day from Russian Orthodox Church's calendar. It is a commemoration of the departed observed on the second Tuesday of Orthodox Easter. That day I left my house, turned on the recorder, put it in my pocket and went on foot to the cemetery where my grandmother was buried.

In Ukraine, where my mother comes from, this day has a different name - Проводы, [ˈprovədɨ], Provody. This slavic word means a rite of farewell to someone. In the Orthodox tradition, it is believed that the first 9 days after Easter the joy of the Resurrection of Christ is so great that the deceased rejoice with the living (so they don’t read memorial prayers in churches). After 9 days, these prayers are resumed, and the "provody" in this context is the seeing off of the deceased back to the cemetery.

It is curious that the same word, "provody", is used in the context of escorting people to the army in Russia. I went through the military service, so this context is also important to me.

The use of only one field recording as a sound source poses the problem of the incomprehensibility of someone else's experience. It could be the experience of military service, or the experience of death etc.

Someone else's experience is always something that can be compared to noise. But, I want to believe, everyone can hear in noise what is familiar to them.
